Published on the occasion of the exhibition Eric Fischl: My Old Neighborhood, at Skarstedt, Pairs, this catalogue features full plate images, installation views, an annotated catalogue, an archival timeline, text by writer and artist David Salle, and an interview placing Eric Fischl in conversation with London-based painter and writer, Matt Lippiatt.
Fischl’s paintings are known for lending insight into the daily lives of suburban families. In My Old Neighborhood, Fischl revisits this familiar subject matter in a new way, revealing scenes of fleeting intimacy between residents. He depicts figures interacting outdoors admidst architecturally noteworthy buildings which were partially rendered using photoshop. In each work, Fischl skillfully develops ambiguous emotional tension between the foreground protagonists, leaving space for audiences to question the interpersonal dynamics at play.
